Don’t let Bias Block You from Achieving Success!
BIAS can be a barrier to success, reaching goals, and achieving shared visions, but it doesn’t need to be. Our B.E. S.E.E.N. training will help you understand the origins of bias, its role in human survival, and how to understand or challenge it.
The Course Begins with Bias Education (B.E.)
We start with Bias Education to help you understand:
- What it is
- Why it exists
- Who has it
- What it means for those who do
- How to recognize and navigate it
Working with You to Break Down the Elements That Make Up BIAS:
- Beliefs
- Ideas
- Assumptions
- Stories our brain tells us (or we’ve been told by others)
We equip you with the tools to address BIAS (your own and others), how to challenge unhealthy or harmful bias (because not all bias is bad), as shared in this training, as well as strategic steps and instructions on how to have uncomfortable/difficult conversations.
Followed by the Four Main Strategies for Overcoming it (S.E.E.N.)
S)ervice: Bringing a sincere desire to serve into every interaction
E)mpathy: Trying to see things as others do
E)mpowerment: Looking for ways to support others in their efforts and growth
N)egotiation: Working toward win-win solutions that benefit everyone involved
. . . and how to turn biases that could stop you into partnerships that benefit you.
The Problems Bias Creates
Unchecked bias:
- Blocks the flow of communication
- Creates misunderstandings
- Escalates conflicts
- Affects how your work is perceived and received by others
But you can overcome it so you – and your work – can B.E. S.E.E.N.
Fighting Bias with Fiction
Fiction provides a unique tool in the arsenal of helping people spot and address their personal biases. By stepping into the shoes of the characters, they see the world through those characters’ eyes. It allows them a safe space to recognize and challenge their biases.
Why Our “Novel” Approach Works to Improve Group Communication
When multiple people read the same novel, it provides them a common language to use in discussions. Participants can then compare their own personal experiences with these characters and with other participants in the program. This provides them a unique perspective they would not gain otherwise while acting as a starting point in empathetic conversations that empower all parties to contribute.
“One reason fiction works so well in the workplace is that characters, plots, and settings in foreign locales help anchor difficult discussions. The narrative allows participants to work through sensitive and nuanced issues in an open and honest manner. ” – Christine Seifert, Harvard Business Review
That’s why we incorporate Nikki T. Anthony’s debut novel, The Price We Pay, into our training.
