The Price We Pay: A Novel Approach To Change

According to a recent Gallup poll, 70% of the population of the United States reports being worried about race relations. 68% report being dissatisfied with the state of it. We intend to open the door to the difficult conversations required to change things with our novel, The Price We Pay.

That’s what happens in a dysfunctional community. Nobody feels safe talking to each other, so they talk about each other.  That’s when misunderstandings grow as trust diminishes and suspicions increase. Eventually, things build up over time and come out in ugliness and violence.

We want to open the door to mature discussion by allowing people from all walks of life to use The Price We Pay as a starting point for healthy conversations around racial issues. Those conversations can produce real change by changing people’s hearts and helping them to see things from a different perspective.

According to an article in the Harvard Business Review by author Christine Seifert entitled, The Case for Reading Fiction, fiction reading increases empathy, theory of mind, and critical thinking skills. She writes, “One reason fiction works so well in the workplace is that characters, plots, and settings in foreign locales help anchor difficult discussions. The narrative allows participants to work through sensitive and nuanced issues in an open and honest manner. ”

It gives people a common language to use in discussing the issues they face and, by stepping into the shoes of a character that isn’t like them, can help them bypass the brain’s natural tendency to assume that everyone sees the world the way they do and shows their brain a different way of looking at the same picture.

PTP Press chose to step into the huge role and responsibility of publisher by taking on The Price We Pay because we believe it’s important to change the way race relations are being discussed in the public domain. It is our hope that this book will do more than entertain – that it will spark candid, open, mature discussions about how we view the state of current race relations and how it feels to look at that topic from another race’s perspective.

By supporting our campaign, not only are contributors showing their support for Black authors like Nikki T. Anthony, who might otherwise struggle to get published, they are helping generate awareness of the need to have these important discussions and to bring them out in the open rather than allowing them to simmer and stew behind closed doors where they tend to explode outward in violent exchanges.

Although Black individuals make up more than 12% of the U.S. population, they make up just 6% of published authors. While publishers made a concerted effort to begin including more Black authors in 2020, effectively doubling the number of published Black authors that year, there is still a decided lack of representation of Black voices.

In order to promote this work to the level we believe it deserves, we are seeking to raise funds to bring this book to communities across the world. Our ultimate goal: 50 Cities in the United States and 50 Countries Around the World in 50 languages. Your sponsorship helps us spread this message far and wide.

7. Workshop Kit Sponsor – $5,000

Guided workshops where participants develop the skills required to LEAD these difficult conversations is a key component in ensuring the effectiveness of our efforts. Creating these workshop kits containing a Study Guide, Workbook, and Leadership Training Materials will cost about $5,000. The Workshop Kit Sponsor will receive:

  • Their name or company name and logo printed in full color on the front cover of the workshop kit with the words, “Workshop Kit Sponsored By”
  • A special acknowledgment page featuring their name or company name and logo recognizing their contribution to making this kit possible inside the study guide, workbook, and training materials

8. Discussion Group Sponsor – $1,000

Discussion Groups where people are able to practice the skills of holding difficult conversations in a small group environment will ensure that our efforts have the broad, lasting impact we are seeking to have. Discussion Group Sponsors will receive:

Getting The Price We Pay into libraries where people who can’t buy it can still join the conversation is something we strive to do. Library System Pack Sponsors will receive:

  • 14 autographed, hardbound editions of The Price We Pay donated to the library system of their choice

10. Single Library Pack Sponsor – $250

Getting The Price We Pay into libraries where people who can’t buy it can still join the conversation is something we strive to do. Library Pack Sponsors will receive:
